For this blog I wanted to discuss the theme we talked about in class referring to American societies, and the people in it, searching for their "15 min. of fame." I believe rewinding to last week's blog entry that we can see their are reality shows that portray those 15 min. of fame into multiple episodes of fame. I think that in some way everyone tries to find their 15 min. through some kind of hobby, interest, or mainly through an act of stupidity.
A couple examples of different ways of acting out ones fame in today's society is through t.v. shows, video/computer games, or mainly through technological advances. We see today through shows such as American Idol, The Biggest Loser, America's got Talent, ect..., that people do whatever they can to show-off a talent, or display their efforts to the world. American Idol and America's got Talent has had horrible singers/talents with absolutely no talent on their show. Don't think for a second that the majority of those people are out their to gain attention from the rest of the world through live t.v., and they know they suck! The show, The Biggest Loser, may be a little change from the stupidity of people; however, I feel some of those people, not all, want to show the world that they can lose the weight. I feel as though some of their reason for joining the show is that they need to fight their own insecurities and have their 15 min. of fame to help them push through their weight loss. So maybe these 15 min. of fame can have a positive aspect overall.
In all, the 15 min. of fame in our society is for the most part, portrayed through acts of stupidity, (YouTube, Tosh.O, Rob Dyrdek's- Ridiculousness), and makes people look flat out unbelievable. I believe our society today is most definetly attention deprived, and for some reason we are all guilty at seeking the attention of others in our 15 min. of fame.
I feel like everyone craves a bit of attention every once in a while, but some really need to go see a therapist for the degree to which they will go for it. I was watching Intervention today and there was a women who cut herself. I have no doubt in my mind that she was depressed and doing it because it made her feel better, but the show was a way to get help without actually saying it. So in a way that show is positive, gives them a voice. There are mainly drug addicts on that show and I know that they crave attention because they want people to know that they are in pain and it's all your fault.
ReplyDeleteI believe that this show is somewhat a positive 15 minutes because otherwise these people would do nothing to help themselves.
I agree that most people seek attention. It's so ridiculousness that we feed into this stupidity. But I definitively do not agree with people cutting themselves for attention. I mean I guess some do for attention but when people are depressed or are addicted to things their heads are not in the right place. Depression is a horrible thing and can make you do things that others may see as stupid ridiculous or attention seeking.
ReplyDeleteI agree, I find it amazing what people can become famous for. it is quite annoying if you ask me. How can these people show youtube videos or be on shows where all they do is drink, hook up with people, and fight become famous? And truely the answer to that is because of us. We find activites like that entertaining and tune in every thursday to watch Jersey show. But another aspect to this is the people involved in these show. The are willing to go on national telvesion and make complete idoits of themselves to make money and become famous. I mean I guess I can see their motive, but I am pretty surre their are much more important people in the world who derseve to be famous. For instance doctors working on curing AIDS, or better cancer treatments. Those are the people in our society we should look up to as role models and idols, yet so many people would rather be the Situation or Snooki from Jersey Shore.
